Here is a great group of photos from another client Becky! She sent me all of these amazing photos and I couldn't decide which ones not to put up so I'm putting them all up! She had deep Gerbera Dasies as her flowers which really pop in the photographs. The bodice of her dress has lace at the empire waist and the rest of the modified A-line/trumpet style gown is dutchess satin with buttons down the back. She looks like she is having a blast!

Bridesmaids, if you are looking to come to The Dress Doctor for alterations please note that alterations for your dresses start at $60 and go up from there, so if it is a special dress or one that needs complicated work and one that you feel is a good investment piece that you would wear again or have "cock-tailed" then come on in! If it's a dress that you aren't too fond of and really just don't want it to fall off during the ceremony then come in for a price quote to see if you think it's worth it, we will also let you know if it's worth it as well!

Newbark VS. TOMS

I have been a fan of TOMS shoes based out of L.A 1) because of their humanitarian concept, 2) because they are always designing with new colors and prints and styles, 3) you can go on shoe drops with them!

Now there is a new company Newbark who is creating similar shoes that cost 7 times as much and do not even give to anything! The shoe looks exactly like a TOMS but it is thinner and is probably made of calf leather. These shoes are "inspired by a Moroccan shoe" but they look like the leather shoes Muslims wear after Wudu or body cleansing with water to keep their feet clean for prayer which can be purchased for about $10-20.

I was just surfing through the net looking up forums on bridal alterations and questions that people had. One girl was so upset that her gown came in and it had to be altered, why should it have to be altered? they measured her didn't they! NO!!! Ladies, the designer doesn't change their entire pattern for YOU I'm sorry but it just doesn't work that way! The boutique has to go by a sizing chart given to them by the designer and they have to professionally give you the size they feel will fit you best according to your largest measurements. So if you are a 34, 26, 38 you may have to go with a size 8 instead of that 6 because of your hips. You must then re-fit your bust and waist so it is proportioned.

We do custom design at our boutique at The Dress Doctor and people still need to have a good fitting! Every person has a different body proportion, size, width, etc... do not panic when your gown comes in too big it can big fixed! We specialize in re-fitting garments and gowns so your gown is just shrunk down to fit YOUR body.

I had also seen several comments on what is an average price for alterations. Some girls were offended at numbers above $300. Ladies, the labor it takes to rip apart a wedding gown and re-shape it and fit it custom to your body is extensive. It's like asking your contractor to tear down a wall and build it back up again for 100 instead of 500 dollars. It is absolutely reasonable for places to charge over $300 for alterations.

If you come to a specialty boutique like ours (the only one of its kind by the way ;) you are paying for the service, location, guarantee, skilled couture methods, skilled seamstresses, skilled fitters (yours truly and my mother), certification of Vera Wang Bridal, 30 years of couture re-fitting experience, and a nice fitting room!

Our bridal alterations normally range between 300-700 dollars. If this is a shock to you still, please read the paragraph above once more! Just kidding, it really depends on what is important to you, if you feel like your Vera Wang gown is fine and you can have just ANYONE work on it then that is your choice, if you feel like your David's Bridal gown was a steal and you'd like some custom work done to it then come on in! We do free consultations that are no obligation, so if you'd like to come in and see how much everything costs it is not a problem at all!

We love people and love solving problems, we are the place you come to when everyone else has messed up, we are the place to come to if you feel that your gown is too important to risk taking anywhere else. As my mother always says "I will stand on my head for my clients!" That is how dedicated she is... we should really have a reality show at our shop.....

The Alterations Process at The Dress Doctor

My mother and I do all of the fittings at our boutique in The Water Tower Place. If you have any question please contact us at (312) 943-2828 or e-mail us at doctors@dressdoctor.com and I will probably be the one responding to your e-mail.

Alterations with us are very custom and for bridal usually take four fittings. At your first fitting or consultation we will have you tell us how you expect to look in your gown and we will explain how it can be done. We usually start with the bodice, or top, of your gown checking to make sure that it fits properly. If it does then we will go to your hem and bustle. If it doesn't we will fit it properly then have you try it on again for your next fitting and then go to the hem. It is usually okay to have your exact shoes by your second appointment or shoes that are of exact height.

Your first appointment or consultation is free and you will be given a receipt of exactly how much your alterations will cost and there is no obligation.

At your first appointment if you do wish to work with us we like to take a 50% deposit, we take all major credit cards and checks. We also like to schedule all of your other appointments (because we fill up quickly) so be prepared to bring your calendar.

Alterations can range between $300-$700 or higher depending on what you need done, and again your total price will be given to you at your first appointment. If you need your gown in one week or less we charge a rush fee of double, if you need your gown in 2-3 weeks we charge a rush fee of time and a half ex: $450 is your cost of alteration plus $225 for rush fee your TOTAL comes to $675 (we do not charge tax on labor only on fabric, nail polish, bras etc..)

Custom designs start at $800 and go up NOT including fabric. For custom projects you can either bring in a picture or sketch or tells us an idea you have and we can create it for you. We have fine fabric swatches in house for you to custom order from or we can tell you how much fabric you need if you'd like to purchase it yourself.

We carry bustiers and strapless bras from Felina that can be purchased through us, or during your consultation we can let you know what undergarments work best with your garment.

We also carry a nice line of costume jewelry by an online company called Mariell
(trust me their pieces are amazing in person and look like they cost a fortune!)

We also work with a custom jewelry designer Ani Afshar who creates pieces inspired by you!

My mother has been creating custom garments for over 25 years and has been written up in Vogue Magazine for being the "Best Copy Cat" in chicago. We work exclusively with Belle Vie Bridal Couture and Vera Wang Chicago (which I highly reccomend!) and will soon be launching a line of Mother of the bride/groom gowns under my label Giselle. Belle Vie is a wonderful place to purchase your gowns and accessories.

I love Essie and also LOVE her bridal collection! They are soft pastels and neutrals (with cute names of course) that look great with any skin tone. Here is my review on how to wear them, because I sell the collection I've tried each color in different ways.

-

-Cloud Nine: Great for french manicure thin or thick white french lines, needs two coats, blends in with many skin tones because it has a white base, looks great on darker skin, great with any gown even ivory or blush gowns, great for modern looks like AMSALE

-Tie The Knot: Pretty opaque so it isn't good for french, great on toes! nice on nails but better for people with yellow hues in their skin not that great for pink skin tones it washes out, lovely on darker tan skin it pops, great for ivory colored gowns with lace and ruffles CHRISTOS

-Happily Ever After: great for light sheer french, has a small amount of iredecence in it but can only be seen with two or three coats, pink base some blue as well which gives it a Cinderella feel, very simple, not bold at all, beautiful with ball-gowns done in silk satins REEM ACRA

-Blushing Bride: great for a "Blush" french, sheer enough for french but bold enough to wear naturally, lovely on sleek silhouettes with bead work or embroidery detail ANN BARGE BLACK LABEL

-True Love: great for a fun color, very sheer pink/rose, not good for french because it makes the white lines look pink and dirty sometimes they crack or look uneven, great for funky brides who are non traditional ELIZABETH FILMORE

-No Pre-Nup- very similar to True Love but has a bit more white base in it, still great for natural and not so nice for french for the same reasons as True Love, great for fun designs that still have traditional under tones VERA WANG

Look for gowns with a higher waist line so that the emphasis of your body is at the smallest point of your torso; right under or at your diaphragm.

Another look that will suit your beautiful body is a mermaid, trumpet, or modified mermaid silhouette; this emphasizes your curves and creates an even smaller waist.

*These types of garments are also great for shorter girls 5'4 and under

The Serena gives the illusion of a higher waistline by shortening the bust and having the waist band sash start right under the bust.

Adelia by Christos

The Adelia has wonderful texture that pours out right at the knee and flows away from the body but gives the illusion of a longer torso and smaller waist.

12588 by Vera Wang

Vera's gown has a sexy mermaid shape with Scarlett O'Hara french ruching at the bottom. The bust is shortened with that same ruching.

This will place the emphasis on your hips, which is the largest part of your body, because the seam of the skirt starts from your hips and extends out.

Anything with a natural waist and a bit lower will do this to you.

Even though this gown has a mermaid silhouette the embroidered beading ends at natural waist and depending on how big of a difference there is between your waist and hips it can either do the job or not, if you really like this gown it is best to just try it on to make sure.

-Make sure not to drink too much caffein (especially coffee) for the big day. Or what some girls tend to do is drink TOO much the night before during their rehearsal dinner; don't do that either! You won't be able to enjoy your day and will be constantly having to use the lavatory!

-Hydrate yourself with plenty of water or Gatorade (preferrably one that is colorless to prevent stains) like Propel which is under the Gatorade company as well.

-Eat something ladies, please!! Have a snack like a PB&J sandwich with multigrain bread or raw green beans with Triscuits and mozerella string cheese, nothing with garlic you do not want bad breath or anything too potent coming out of your pores! Always finish a snack with yellow or green apple slices to help neutralize bad breath.

-For indigestion either chew on some mint gum or bite into a fresh mint leaf (if you're at a hotel the kitchen usually garnishes something with mint) or small slice of fresh ginger, placing the piece in the far back of your mouth underneath your molars and allowing the flavor to slide down your throat. Mint and Ginger quickly ease indigestion and also help with the process.

-If you feel a panic attack coming along; close your eyes and breathe in and out slowly and deeply ten times either in your palms or in a paper bag, each interval of breath taking eight seconds. Then clasp your hands together behind you and push up your chest so that your sternum is reaching for the ceiling, this should cause you to yawn which will allow for more oxygen to your brain which should help relax you for your big day!

The best place to go for a wedding gown is Vera Wang Chicago. They have great customer service and amazing gowns. I alter Vera Wang gowns everyday and see nothing but great quality in fabrics and workmanship. One of my favorite gowns so far is from her Luxe collection called the Audrey, it is layers of fanned Chantilly lace with mixtures of crinkle chiffon and organza and to top it off you must purchase the ever so popular Audrey belt that goes with almost any Vera Wang gown and then later can be used for either casual wear or another special event. My most favorite gowns are in the actual store, it is amazing! Special Occasion Undergarments

Ladies! If you feel that you need Spanx or need to tell a friend that they need them;

1) make sure that the garment isn't too form fitting for spanx with a seam down the center, try and get seamless

2) if they are the long above the knee spanx take a step in the garment with your spanx on to see if they show through

3) in a special occasion garment it is always best to get the spanx that come up under your bust and no seam down the center

I recommend the Hide & Sleek Hi-Rise Body Smoother at Spanx.com

If you need the right bra;

try and find a bustier with no boning down the front

My personal favorite is the Felina Essentials Seamless Hidden Wire Bustier #7643 it is the model we sell at our store The Dress Doctor and I highly recommend.

If you are looking for coverage I recommend cups that can be sewn in or sticky chicken cutlets by NuBra. At The Dress Doctor we sell NuBras and also have sew-in cups that provide great coverage. The best model of sew-ins are called Three-Way petals at brazabra.com
